The original 2016 album of ten plaintive and emotional minimalist
piano-focused tracks captured a moment in time of personal mourning
and struggle.
In a period of big change, I longed for something simple
and intimate. I wanted to climb into the music like a blanket. It was
recorded on a Charles Walter upright piano in my living room in
Portland, Oregon. This was the first piano I ever purchased and
recorded. Kyleen King and Jessie Dettwiler joined in and added string
textures to a few special tracks. My dog Kaya can be heard on multiple
songs doing her thing in the background. She used to sleep while I
played. Many years later, this album was the soundtrack to her
passing. She showed me how sometimes simple things are the medicine we
need in a time of chaos. I dedicate this album to Kaya and the wisdom
of change.
Getting back into the recordings, ten years later, it was like
traveling back in time. I found myself in the room and the immediacy
of the moment that, in some ways, never left. The premasters of the
album were remixed by myself and mastered by Taylor Deupree.
